Words can’t express, music comes instead – Hans Christian Andersen
By Mantel Clock Studio
Music is a universal language that transcends borders and connects all people. When words fail to express, music comes into being, putting emotion into melody, soothing the soul, inspiring and changing lives. No matter who we are or where we come from, music can touch everyone’s heartstrings, and a single song can often bring back memories. Music is like a magical thread that connects us to precious past moments.
Classic music boxes occupy a unique place among the many precious pieces of music that have been passed down from generation to generation. These timeless pieces come in many forms, including traditional music boxes, ballet music boxes, novelty designs, accordions and modern triple concert music movements. Each one is a testament to the timeless appeal of music in its purest, most enchanting form.
A journey through the history of the music box
Since its introduction at the end of the 18th century, the music box has captivated audiences all over the world. 1796 marked the first major breakthrough in the history of the music box with the invention of the “musical comb” by Swiss watchmaker Antoine Favre. The comb consists of a flat steel comb with teeth of different lengths, which are used to play beautiful melodies. The comb was plucked by a rotating cylinder with carefully arranged needles, which produced different notes depending on the arrangement of the needles and the speed of rotation. Longer teeth produced deeper tones and shorter teeth produced higher pitched notes. Around the same time, Johann Maelzel invented the first true music box – a desk clock capable of playing five alternating melodies. By the mid-19th century, Swiss craftsmen had further perfected the process and added windchests to mimic
Around the same time, Johann Maelzel invented the first true music box – a desk clock capable of playing five alternating melodies. By the mid-19th century, Swiss craftsmen had further perfected the process and added bellows that mimicked birdsong. Early octaves were designed to be pocket-sized, small enough to fit inside a watch, but by the 19th century they had evolved into magnificent household objects housed in elegant wooden boxes.

From simple 9-note designs to complex designs with hundreds of notes, the variety of music boxes was amazing. However, by the beginning of the 20th century, the rise of the piano and the phonograph changed people’s musical preferences, and the music box was relegated to a nostalgic object.
The Charm of the Organ
The pipe organ is the “tuba version” of the music box, and it’s worth mentioning here as well. These impressive instruments rely on a crank mechanism and windchest to produce their signature sound. Pipe organs appeared in churches throughout Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries, and later became popular as street and market organs. Today, they are an integral element of German Christmas markets and other holiday gatherings.
The shell of a traditional accordion is made of beautifully carved wood, inside of which are arranged a number of pipes that play melodies pre-programmed into the rotary organ. The melodies they play are usually ethereal and moving, causing passersby to stop and listen as the air is filled with amazing music.
The revival of the modern music box
After World War II, the Japanese company Sankyo revolutionized the music box industry with its affordable 9- to 30-tooth mechanism. This innovation revived the love of music boxes by making them accessible to a global audience. Today, music boxes are not just collectors’ items, they are personalized souvenirs that evoke memories and emotions through their enchanting melodies.
Whether you like classic tunes such as Swan Lake , Waltz of the Flowers and The Blue Danube, or modern favorites such as Beethoven and The Beatles, there is a music box melody that will strike a chord in your heart. The versatility of the Music Box is also reflected in the seasonality and novelty of the music, including Christmas carols, birthday jingles and children’s classics.
