Understanding the Mechanics of Traditional Wall Clocks

Mechanical Wall Clocks

One of the most iconic wall clocks of all time, our Mechanical Wall Clocks need to be wound with a key once a week. This type of wall clock is available in two versions:

  • Chiming Clock: the dial has three winding holes, each of which is connected to a spring. One of them drives the chronograph pendulum, the second drives the quarter chime, and the third drives the full chime (e.g., three times at 3 o’clock). Most of our chiming models feature the famous Westminster chime, but for flexibility, a manual switching option is also available. Some even offer an Automatic Night Off function, which stops the chimes at a pre-set time in the evening to ensure undisturbed sleep.
  • Hammered Clocks: these clocks have two winding holes, one spring to power the pendulum and the other to power the hourly strikes. Our MECHANICAL CLOCKS produce a melodious chime through a series of hammers striking tuned chime bars or rods. For longevity, we recommend maintenance by a professional clockmaker every 7 to 10 years.

Battery-Powered Wall Clocks

For those seeking convenience, our Battery-Powered Traditional Wall Clocks combine the appeal of mechanical design with lower maintenance costs. They feature a high-quality movement that emits a Westminster chime (or optional Bim Bam chime) through a built-in speaker. They also offer the option to reduce the chime volume or mute it completely, especially at night. To ensure proper operation, the batteries need to be replaced only once every 12 months.

Regulator Wall Clock

The Regulator Wall Clock is a masterpiece of chronometry with a weight-driven mechanism regulated by a swinging pendulum. Introduced in the late 18th century, these clocks offer exceptional accuracy and are available in chime and striking styles. Unlike spring-wound clocks, regulators utilize weights suspended from a cable system that must be wound weekly. Some advanced models combine a weight-driven and spring-driven mechanism for enhanced performance. These clocks are available in larger sizes, ranging from 900 mm to 1200 mm, and can make an impressive focal point, similar to a grandfather clock, without taking up too much space.

Choose the perfect traditional wall clock

Size matters

Consider the size of your space and the visual impact you want the clock to make. For larger rooms, a gravity-driven clock like our Mantel Clock Westminster Chime Regulator can add to the grandeur of the room, while smaller spaces may be better suited to a more compact, modern, traditional design such as our Satin Black Cable Driven Regulator Clock.

Colors and Finishes

Our Traditional Wall Clock is available in a variety of Wood Finishes including WalnutCherryOak, and even a stylish Black Design. You can choose a finish that complements your existing décor or choose a contrasting color to make the wall clock the highlight of the room.

Ringing or not ringing?

Different clocks make different sounds, from the iconic Westminster chime to the subtle Tap Tone. If you prefer a quieter option, consider a non-ringing clock such as our 31 Day Precision Regulator Clock. Made with precision craftsmanship, this timepiece is a true collector’s item, equipped with a carbon fiber pendulum, a Graham escapement and ruby bearings to ensure ultimate precision and longevity.

Did you know?

Prior to the invention of the pendulum clock in the 17th century, timepieces had a daily error of 15 minutes. The introduction of the pendulum clock as a timekeeping mechanism reduced the error to just 15 seconds, making the pendulum clock the most accurate timepiece for centuries until the advent of the 20th century quartz cell movement.
