The Birth of the Pendulum Clock

The story of the pendulum clock begins in 1584, when Galileo Galilei noticed an oscillating lamp in a cathedral. By observing its continuous motion, he discovered the law of the pendulum clock, or “isochrony”, which states that the duration of a pendulum’s swing is the same regardless of the arc of the swing. Galileo’s discovery set the stage for future innovations.

In 1656, the Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens, in collaboration with the clockmaker Salomon Coste, succeeded in creating the first pendulum clock. The clock, called “Haagsche Klokje”, improved timekeeping to within 15 seconds per day, a remarkable achievement at the time.
