Prost at Oktoberfest in Munich – a good time with MantelClock Studio!
Imagine a festival where people drink more than 7 million liters of beer, eat 700,000 delicious sausages and chicken, and consume 2.7 million kilowatt-hours of electricity – the equivalent of 52 years of electricity consumption for a family of four! This grand celebration is the Munich Oktoberfest – the world’s most famous beer festival and mobile amusement park. Oktoberfest is held annually on Munich’s Theresienwiese, a 42-hectare expanse of grassy lawn that is the site of Oktoberfest and the iconic Munich cultural event that attracts millions of visitors each year.
The origins of Oktoberfest in Munich
The origins of this legendary festival can be traced back to October 12, 1810, when Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Theresa of Saxe-Hildburghausen were married. The citizens of Munich were invited to participate in the royal festivities, which took place in the open spaces outside the city gates. These open spaces, later named Theresienwiese, are still the centerpiece of the Oktoberfest and are affectionately known as “d’Wiesn ” by the locals.
What began as a royal horse race to celebrate the end of a wedding became a tradition the following year, and in 1811 an agricultural exhibition was added to promote Bavarian agriculture, a tradition that continues every three years on the festival grounds . 1896 saw the iconic beer tent and hall replace the small beer stalls, paving the way for Oktoberfest to become the global event it is today. The road to today’s global event was paved.
Oktoberfest in the modern world
Today, Oktoberfest is a vibrant celebration of Bavarian culture, attracting more than seven million visitors to Munich each year. Featuring traditional beer tents, amusement rides, live music and dance performances, Oktoberfest celebrates the spirit of unity and fun. The scale of Oktoberfest in Munich is breathtaking – 7 million liters of beer are served, enough to fill three Olympic-size swimming pools!
Oktoberfest attendees dress in traditional German attire: women in elegant German dresses and men in classic leather pants with suspenders and Tyrolean hats. The Oktoberfest features 17 large beer tents and 21 smaller beer tents, creating a lively space for attendees to raise a glass and celebrate a good time. In addition to Munich, many smaller Munich Oktoberfest celebrations have sprung up around the world, allowing people to get into the Oktoberfest spirit while sipping beer.
