A Brief History of Beer

Mantel Clock Studio

Beer is one of mankind’s oldest beverages and has been a cherished part of cultures around the globe for thousands of years. Its name is derived from the Latin word “bibere “, meaning “to drink”. The earliest records of beer date back to the Sumerians about 10,000 years ago, during the grain harvest. Archaeological discoveries, such as ancient beer kettles dating back to 4,000 BC, offer a glimpse into the brewing process in ancient Sumeria and Egypt, where women brewed beer as a household skill.

Germany also has a long tradition of beer brewing. In Bavaria, beer brewing dates back to 800 BC. During the early Christian era, Christian monks further developed beer brewing techniques and established breweries that are still representative today. The Weihenstephan Brewery, founded in 1040 at the Benedictine Weihenstephan Abbey, holds the title of the world’s oldest brewery. Similarly, the Augustiner-Bräu, founded in Munich in 1328, still brews fine beer today.

Early beer was very different from the refreshing, golden-colored beverage we drink today. It was as thick as porridge, and people drank it through straws to filter out by-products such as bread and herbs. The Sumerians are famous for inventing these straws specifically for drinking beer, which further cemented beer’s status as a time-honored traditional beverage for over 10,000 years.

April 23, 1516 – A Milestone in the History of Beer Brewing

The long history of beer takes us to the pivotal moment of April 23, 1516, when Count Wilhelm IV of Bavaria decreed the Reinheitsgebot, or German Purity Brewing Act. This decree stipulated that Bavarian brewers could only use three ingredients: water , barley and hops, thus ensuring the quality and purity of the beer.

Prior to the Purity Law, brewers often used questionable ingredients such as wood chips, soot and even toxic additives to promote fermentation .The Purity Act brought regulation and quality control, protected the brewing process and promoted the use of healthier, more reliable ingredients. Interestingly, the law was originally designed to prevent brewers from hoarding wheat and to ensure that people could buy affordable bread.

Although the law was originally designed to prevent brewers from hoarding wheat and to ensure an adequate supply of bread, today it has evolved into a valuable tradition. By 1906, the Purity Law had expanded throughout Germany and became the oldest consumer protection law still in force today. Despite minor changes to the law, such as allowing the use of yeast and other malted grains, the Purity Law continues to define and promote German beer culture.

This tradition is so deeply rooted in German society that April 23rd is designated as Pure Brewing Quality Beer Day every year. For over 500 years, brewers have been observing the Purity Act, showcasing their brewing skills and uniting beer lovers around the world in their appreciation of this ancient beverage.

This year, honor the Beer Purity Law with a traditional German beer, best served in a classic beer glass, to celebrate a glorious page in brewing history.
